The Emerald cut diamond is a beautiful diamond cut that is generally going to be cheaper than a Round Brilliant diamond of equivalent quality. The Emerald cut diamond has cropped corners and a stepped cut around the edge. this protects the diamond from inherent weakness that is common in Emerald diamonds due to it being prone to having more inclusions that might weaken the body of the diamond.

The Emerald cut diamond is a beautiful diamond. While it is generally not going to be as fiery and brilliant as a Round diamond, it makes up for it with broad flashes of light. these broad flashes are due to the way the Emerald diamond is cut with long facets.

Guide To Choosing An Emerald Cut Diamond

Because of the way the Emerald cut diamond is so open, with the long facets exposing the “insides” of the diamond so broadly, the Emerald is prone to it’s color level being more noticeable to the naked eye at higher levels than in many other diamond shapes. It also generally exposes the inclusions more.

That means that when buying an Emerald cut diamond, it is recommended that the details you look for have slightly higher minimums than most other diamond shapes. Obviously within budget constraints. This is made up for by the fact that due to the Emerald cut diamond being less traditional, and therefore slightly less in demand, the price of the Emerald cut diamond will generally be a bit cheaper for equivalent quality levels.

Recommended Emerald Cut Levels

The recommended levels for Emerald cut diamonds are generally accepted to be like this:

  • diamond color: minimum level of G, H
  • diamond clarity: minimum level of VS2, SI1
  • diamond cut: minimum level of Good
  • length to width ratio: This is harder to define, as everybody has his or her own preference. Some like a longer and narrower Emerald, while others like it not quite as long. The ranges given are from 1.50 to 1.75:1. Others recommend 1.30 to 1.40:1. My personal preference is the 1.30 to 1.40 range, but to each his own. This is a far more personal measure than any other.
