The New York Giants won Super Bowl XLIV (46) last night, and besides for the Lombardi trophy, along with the adoring masses and increased contracts, also receive Super Bowl Rings.

I have not yet seen a picture of this years Super Bowl Ring, but here are some interesting facts about the Super Bowl Rings..

The NFL pays about $5,000 for each ring, and supplies the winning team with 150 rings. The team can buy more, and can make them more valuable, out of their own pockets.

The team generally uses the 150 rings to distribute among the various players, coaches, trainers, and other assistants. Some might be saved for former players or for charity giveaways.

The ring is made from white or yellow gold, and is generally covered in diamonds. It will usually include the team name and logo, along with the logo of the Super Bowl, the year and the words “World Champion”. The ring might also include images of the trophy or another image selected by the team. The final score might be on the ring as well.

The Super Bowl Ring is usually covered in diamonds, with varying patterns. Often, larger diamonds will be used to represent how many times the team has won the Super Bowl, or other significant point the team wants symbolized. The larger diamonds will often be encircled by smaller diamonds as well. Rings have been known to bear more than 100 diamonds, with the total weight of the ring approaching 4 ounces!

Super Bowl rings are generally values at about $20,000, though some older ones have been known to sell in the range of $50,000 with the top value of $70,000 being achieved in the sale of a ring from the Green Bay Packers victory in Super Bowl 1.

Jostens, a jewelry designer, has designed 29 of the 45 Super Bowl rings to date.

The largest Super Bowl Ring ever made was for William “Refrigerator” Perry of the Chicago Bears at the whopping size of 23 (rather than the average 10-12) from Super Bowl XX.

The first Super Bowl Ring, from the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl win in Super Bowl 1 in 1967, bore 1 single diamond. The Patriots Super Bowl Ring from Super Bowl XXXIX was encrusted with 124 diamonds.

Charles Haley is the player with the most Super Bowl rings as a player, with 5 rings total from his championship days with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. A number of players have 4 rings, including Joe Montana (one of my favorite players ever). Some people have more than this, but only as coaches or combined as coaches and players. the most rings held by anyone is 7 Super Bowl rings held by Neal Dahlen as both a player and a coach. Tom Brady was gunning for his fourth Super Bowl Ring last night.

Here are some images of some of the Super Bowl Rings from over the years..

Small diamonds, when I use that term, are diamonds that are smaller than 1 carat. Today’s recommended diamond is the best small Round diamond for a budget of $3000.

The diamond is this 0.70 carat Round diamond, with H color and VS2 clarity. The diamond is an Excellent cut Round diamond, and it sells for $3,070.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1394169.asp

This diamond is a beauty. My only debate was to select a slightly larger diamond by compromising on the diamond color up to I or J, or to select this diamond with better color but a bit smaller. I chose the smaller diamond despite the size being differential being more significant than the color differential (at this size) for a completely unrelated reason. I chose the smaller diamond with better color because this diamond was nicer than the other diamonds.

Small Round Diamond

I consider any diamond that is smaller than 1 carat to be in the category of a small diamond. It is just a name, and not even completely true, as diamond from about 0.75 carat to 0.99 carat are all nice sized diamond and not at all really small diamonds, most people consider 1 carat to be a significant cut-off point, so I categorize anything smaller than that as a “small diamond”. Just for categorization’s sake.

That makes today’s recommended diamond a small diamond. Today’s recommended diamond is the best small Round diamond for less than $2,500.

More For Your Money, and Easier To Budget

Small diamonds are great, because they are easier to budget, especially for a young couple on what might be a limited income. As well, because they are smaller, many of the flaws are covered up better and are less visible to the naked eye. That means you can get a nicer looking diamond for less money. Also, the higher colors have slightly lesser of an effect on the appearance of a small diamond, as there is less surface area exposed to the light. While a J rated diamond that is 1.5 carats, for example, might have a significantly yellowish tinge to it, a 0.75 carat diamond that is rated J will generally not appear quite as yellow. That, too, means that you can buy a diamond with a higher color rating and be proportionally less affected by it – thus paying less for more.

The recommended diamond is this 0.72 carat Round diamond, with J color and VS2 clarity. The diamond is an Excellent cut Round diamond, and it sells for $2,340.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1443510.asp

This diamond is a beautiful diamond that is very clean, and definitely eye clean, and the J color is not strong. This small Round diamond is a great buy, especially for a young couple on a limited budget. It is a great diamond at a great price.

Today’s recommended diamond is going to be the best Round diamond for a budget of up to $11,000.

The diamond is this 1.39 carat Round diamond, with H color and SI1 clarity. The diamond is an Excellent cut round diamond, and it sells for $10,610.

This diamond looks great, and with the diamond clarity being rated at SI1, this diamond is a very good buy. The diamond is very eye-clean, though with a good loupe you can see a couple of the small inclusions, though they do not detract at all form the appearance of the diamond..

Today’s recommended diamond is going to be the best 1 carat Round diamond for a budget of between $7500 and $8000.

The diamond is this 1.01 carat Round diamond, with I color and VS2 clarity. The diamond is an Excellent cut Round diamond, and it sells for $7,600.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Premium-Cut-Round-Diamond-1404835.asp

And here you have the GIA certificate of this diamond:

As you can see in the GIA certificate there is a cluster of inclusions. Looking at the diamond itself though (see the diamond image magnified above), you will not be able to see the inclusions with your eyes, or even under a normal loupe. That makes this diamond a great buy.

Best Round Diamond For $5000 Budget

The diamond is this 0.90 carat Round diamond, with I color and VS2 clarity. The diamond is an Ideal cut Round diamond, and it sells for $4,960.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1438951.asp

This diamond has slight flaws, but they cannot be seen easily – not to the naked eye at all, and even under a loupe only with great difficulty.

The color of the diamond is not the icy color of a diamond rated F color, but it has no real yellowing. Rather, it has the warmer shade of a clear color right before the yellowish tinging begins.

This diamond is a great buy.
